how the scores work
  • Low-speed lift — area × a CLmax proxy that rises with camber, thickness and a blunter nose: takeoff speed ∝ 1/√(S·CLmax).
  • Glide & pump — aspect ratio (induced drag ∝ 1/AR), small bonus for clean tips, penalised when the mean chord gets tiny (low-Re friction).
  • Top-end speed — mostly drag area: small planform, low camber, thin section, sharp nose; a little sweep helps.
  • Carving — lower AR and shorter span roll faster, strong taper unloads the tips, downturned (gull) tips grip the turn, pointed/crescent tips release cleanly.
  • Stability — area and thickness forgive, a blunt nose stalls gently, flat tips track straight; very high AR gets twitchy.
Honest disclaimer: these are monotone heuristics fitted to wing-foil folklore and first-order aerodynamics (lift equation, lifting-line induced drag, Reynolds trends). They rank design trade-offs; they are not CFD, and no water was harmed.
